As part of the upcoming annual Poppy Street Appeal, volunteers will be positioned across the Perth CBD on Friday, 09 November 2018.
The Poppy Appeal is part of RSLWA’s fundraising efforts which directly assists our veterans and their families.
“It is important that all our veterans and their families know that they can always count on our support, especially when they need it in their hour of need,” RSLWA State President Peter Aspinall said.
“We strongly encourage the WA community to get behind this year’s Poppy Street Appeal and donate towards supporting our veterans and their families in need,” Peter said.
“This is just one small way of thanking our veteran community while recognising the sacrifice of approximately 62,000 Australians who lost their lives in the First World War,” he said.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the ANZ Bank are getting right behind this year’s Poppy Street Appeal, with both organisations kindly providing personnel and staff as fundraising volunteers.
“On behalf of RSLWA, I particularly want to give my thanks to the ADF and ANZ for assisting us to raise funds at this year’s Poppy Street Appeal,” Peter Aspinall said.
The red poppy is also the symbol of remembrance to all those who lost their lives during the First World War. As this year marks the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day is on Sunday 11 November 2018, it presents a particularly poignant time.
Armistice Day 2018 will be marked by several commemorative events, including the annual Commemorative Service. This will be held at the State War Memorial in Kings Park. It will feature a military gun salute and a Royal Australian Air Force flypast. People are encouraged to arrive around 10:30am for a 11:00am commencement.
