The Vyner Brooke Tragedy

With the fall of Singapore imminent, 65 Australian Army Nurses along with civilians and crew boarded the SS Vyner Brooke and departed Singapore on 12 February 1942. Two days later, the vessel was discovered by Japanese planes, strafed, bombed and sunk in Bangka Strait. Twelve nurses were lost at sea, twenty - one massacred at Radji Beach on Bangka Island, and 8 died as prisoners of war.

The Applecross Sub Branch of RSLWA will be holding a commemoration service in honour of these nurses, on Sunday 12 February, 2023 at the memorial, Honour Ave, Point Walter Reserve, Bicton at 10.10am. We will also be unveiling and dedicating the new Memorial. We extend a warm welcome to you to attend and lay a floral tribute should you wish. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the service. We are requesting attendees to be seated by 9.45am.
