Raising funds to support the welfare of WA veterans and their families.

Next appeal: Friday 3rd November 2023.

The Poppy Appeal is an annual fundraising event where we remember and acknowledge those who lost their lives or have suffered through all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Each year current serving ADF members, volunteers and RSLWA come together to fundraise in the City of Perth, TransPerth train stations, and at other locations around Western Australia. You can show your support for Australian veterans and their families by donating, wearing a red poppy, and observing a minute of silence at 11:00 on the 11th of November to remember the brave people who have served and sacrificed.

How your donation helps veterans

Your donation provides urgent financial assistance to veterans and their families that are facing hardship and need it the most. Donations from the Poppy Appeal are distributed by RSLWA, RSL Sub-Branches, and the WA Aged Sailor’s, Soldier’s, and Airmen’s Relief Trust Fund (WAASSARTF).

$150 will provide a tank of fuel.
$250 will provide food for a week.
$350 can cover a utility bill.
$500 will cover accommodation for a week.
$1,000 will help towards funeral expenses for a family.

RSLWA is perfectly positioned to identify the greatest need for support with its extensive Australian veteran and defence network.

Welfare support is administered by the RSLWA Welfare Officer and local Sub-Branches who understand veterans' unique situations and then back it up with a supportive network of local members. To read more about veterans' issues, visit the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

History of the Poppy Appeal

The International Poppy Appeal was established in the United Kingdom in 1921. The Poppy Appeal started in Australia in 1923 and is the RSL’s longest-running fundraiser. This event coincides with Remembrance Day, where poppies are given in return for a donation that supports veterans and their families.

In World War 1 (also known as the Great War), red poppies bloomed across the Western Front in northern France and Belgium. Over 295,000 Australians served on the Western Front between March 1916 and November 1918. In this conflict, 46,000 Australians lost their lives and more than 130,000 were wounded.
